Whether you are a beginner or a running veteran, there are plenty of websites to inform, motivate, and inspire you. Here are some of the most helpful.

Running has always been one of the best forms of exercise, but with shows such as The Biggest Loser plus televised races and triathalons, the sport is becoming even more popular. Many more people are finding the physical and mental benefits of running to be a vital part of their lives.

If you are new to running, you need information that is clear, concise, and correct. As you progress it becomes even more important. The right information can save you from injuries and safety issues, and help you find races and events in your area. Here are a few of the running websites that will keep you up to speed on the latest news and information.

Cool Running

The site title may make you think of the Jamaican bobsled team, but Cool Running is dedicated to an entirely different sport. They pride themselves on being the complete online resource for runners of all abilities, and they definitely do not disappoint. One of the best features here is their trademarked Couch to 5K running plan, taking beginning runners gradually up to a 5K pace in about two months. This program minimizes pain and injuries, because if you do too much too soon you could hurt yourself and completely lose the desire to run. There are also several ways to search for races and running events, information on injury prevention, nutrition, and running gear, and even coaches to help you run your best race. You can log your training and race results here as well, keeping you organized and motivated. There is no end to the wealth of information at Cool Running.

Road Runners Club of America

The RRCA is dedicated to promoting the grassroots effort of running clubs and events as well as training programs for recreational runners. They support runners of all ability levels and keep a directory of clubs, coaches, and events, and the safety of all runners is considered the top priority. They run a coaching certification program to make sure that trainers are well-versed in all areas of the sport before coaching others. Along with all of this are plenty of tips and guidelines to keep you running smoothly.

Runners Web

This website is jam-packed with information and links for the United States and Canada. Runners Web also covers the triathlete, and brings links from all over the running world right to you. They even review books and movies related to the sport. If you are looking for plenty of running sites to choose from, this is the site that will help you find them.

Runner's World Magazine

This magazine is one of the running world's most valuable resources. Runner's World offers articles and news from across the globe, along with blogs, videos, and runner success stories to keep you inspired and motivated. There is a section on how to begin running plus plenty of advice for longtime athletes on training, equipment, and races. Just about everything you need to know about running can be found here, including forums where you can chat with other runners.

Running Times Magazine

The website for Running Times contains some articles from the magazine, plus other news that can only be found online. They cover high school and college running along with the usual races and events. Just like their counterpart, they have running forums and blogs, production information, and injury prevention sections. You can even check out what's coming up in future issues.

Women's Running Magazine

Formulated especially for female athletes, Women's Running features all of the information that runners of both sexes need plus more. There are stories on raising girls to be runners and choosing the proper sports bra for comfort and performance. Links and videos are provided for additional support, and they also have a reader advisory board to help find ways to make their magazine and website even better. Girl/Woman Power is on the move.

No matter where you are in your running career, or even if you are only starting to think about it, these websites can offer a variety of news and information to keep you healthy and fit. Check out their advice before, during, and after your run!

www.runnersworld.co.za is an excellent website if you run in South Africa. Another South African site (actually it's a blog) that always puts a smile on my face is www.thebadjogger.com. It's a girlie site (I'm a guy) but I love her humour.
